Going all optical, cutting out the electric middleman

In technology, writing on October 12, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Light pressure moves a tiny lever, which changes the amount of light going through a waveguide in the lever. The upshot is an optomechanical switch that can act at radio frequencies. The upshot of that may be faster optical communications because light doesn’t have to be converted to electricity to be switched.

And the upshot of that may be faster downloads over the Internet. More cute cat videos, less waiting.
