When demand and supply aren’t synched

In Batteries, technology on July 20, 2012 at 11:47 am

Electrical demand trends are predictable, but specific demand at any one time fluctuates. Matching demand to supply is a big issues — and major strength — of using a large electrical grid.

But unlike fossil-fuel-burning power plants, renewable energy sources can’t usually be ramped up when demand peaks — and their generation can vary as well.

Predictability is a big issue for generation, so it’s no surprise that renewable generation installations are increasingly being paired with energy storage (ie, big damn batteries). Read more from ZDNet:

Energy storage technology recharges.
