Upcoming appearance: Arisia 2012

The Arisia 2012 science fiction convention is this coming weekend in Boston.
More specifically, January 13 – 16, 2012 at the Westin Boston Waterfront. (More info about Arisia)

I’ll be on two science panels at Arisia this year:

“Alternative Energy” on Sun 7:00 PM in Adams
How plausible are alternatives to fossil fuels at the moment? What new options are out there? Just how expensive is it to “go green” in our energy generation? What are the world governments doing to this end right now, and what can the average citizen do?

I’ll be moderating this panel, and plan to pick the brains of our panelists: Ken Gale, James B Van Bokkelen, Ctein, and James Bredt.

“Soldiers Made to Order” on Mon 2:30 PM in in Adams
Given that the Defense Department has been working on building a better soldier for years, how close are we to Captain America? Or Chuck 2.0? What advances have been made already and will these trickle down to commercial medicine?

Other panelists include neuroscientist Jason Schneiderman and naturopath Jim Prego. I’m not qualified for the biological questions, but I can talk about the money DARPA has been putting towards high-tech for outfitting infantry. (It’s more about batteries and camo than vibranium shields.)

I will also be involved in several other, more fannish, panels. See you there!
