Two for one: Nanostructuring Batteries

Two articles from Technology Review about improving lithium ion batteries by nanostructuring the electrodes. The older one (from April) describes a nanostructured foam electrode that allows a lithium ion battery to recharge in seconds — but actually manufacturing the electrode seemed likely to be expensive. Last week Technology Review published an article about a nanostructured lithium-iron phosphate electrodes, which “could cut battery-cell manufacturing costs by 10 percent” while allowing the battery to deliver a lot of power fast and maintain energy storage capacity. (These properties are important for electric cars, not so much for laptops.)
