The international production of both generic and brand-name drugs makes it difficult to track contamination and adulteration in ingredients. In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is charged with inspecting and enforcing quality and safety rules, but most generic drug suppliers are now outside the US, and the number of suppliers, middlemen, brokers and traders keeps growing.
