Ship-Borne Laser Zaps Target a Mile Away

That photon-torpedo story from last week does have some interesting science behind it. I spoke with Program Manager Peter Morrison of  the Maritime Laser Demonstrator, and found out what they’re doing, and why it would be preferable to using conventional weapons.  The resulting news story is here:

Because the laser operates in the infrared, beyond the range that our eyes can see, the video doesn’t show you the laser beam. However, it does give some idea of the amount of movement that the targeting system deals with.
