Radiation Chart (just how much is that?)

In Science on March 23, 2011 at 7:28 pm

This is the most timely and most clear graphic I’ve seen in 2011.

To paraphrase my friend Vicka Corey, you haven’t received a good education if you don’t understand scale. In the Powers of 10 series (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3), I concentrated on the scale of sizes, but today the scale of radiation exposure. The chart, by xkcd creator Randall Munroe, does conflate some long-term and single-dose exposures, but it’s a really excellent, fast way to gain a sense of scale, and to interpret the numbers in the sound bites coming from coverage of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactors.
