Arisia! Part 1: The Arts

In science fiction on January 21, 2011 at 8:08 pm

I had a great time at the Arisia science fiction con! The convention has an astonishing number and variety of artists and craftspeople. It has a thriving and high quality art show, as well as crafters selling their handmade clothing and jewelry and costume accessories and beautiful things. Plus, of course, people wear their costumes and handmade art. In my youth, convention dealers sold books, games, t-shirts, and plastic trinkets. Times have changed for the better.

Two artists really stood out:
Artist Guest of Honor Josh Simpson showed amazing, mesmerizing pieces of glass art. Josh was a pleasure to talk to, as well.

I was delighted that I had a chance to chat with Eric, the head mask-maker behind Behind the Mask Studio (on Etsy) and Behind the Mask Studio. The masks are astonishing, each one unique, and of far better quality and more wearable than any I’d examined before. The mask pictured is one of the ones I saw this weekend, and while the photo is lovely, the mask is even better in person!
